There is one totally new movie this week and four major expansions.
Expanding: Lone Survivor (2900 theaters; 72% positive reviews; rated R without nudity). Gung-Ho war story about four SEALs who were greatly outnumbered in a battle vs the Taliban.
Expanding: Inside Llewyn Davis (700 theaters; 94% positive reviews; rated R without nudity). The Coen Brothers present their intelligent, melancholy take on the Greenwich Village folk scene in the early 60s.
Expanding: Her (1700 theaters; 92% positive reviews; rated R, including full frontal nudity from May Lindstrom). Joaquin Phoenix falls in love with the female voice in his smart phone.
Expanding: August: Osage County (900 theaters; 61% positive reviews; rated R without nudity). Granny-flick with Julia Roberts and Meryl Streep.
New: The Legend of Hercules (2100 theaters; unreviewed; rated PG-13). Renny Harlin's take on the legendary sword-and-sandals hero.
Box office predictions:
Lone Survivor should take first place with about $20M.
Her should take in about $8M.
The Legend of Hercules is expected to gross about $7M.
Osage County and Llewyn Davis should gross around $5M each.
