(Cut to people sitting in the lounge of an opulent old world European hotel. They stare blankly ahead and speak in hollow tones, pausing between their sentences, as if waiting for their words to stop echoing. They speak in a language unfamiliar to us (Estonian?), but we read their dialogue in subtitles.)

Woman: Resnais died today.

Man: Or perhaps he is still alive.

Man #2: Or perhaps he died many years ago.

Woman: Or perhaps he will never die.

Man: Or perhaps he never existed at all.

Man #2: Hard to say.
