There are five films to consider this week:
Noah (3400 theaters; 81% positive reviews; PG-13). Russell Crowe builds an ark.
Sabotage (2500 theaters; not reviewed; rated R for a brief underwater nipple from Olivia Williams, a random breast in a party scene, and the breasts of a stripper - possibly Angela Kerecz). Action movie with Schwarzenegger versus drug lords.
Cesar Chavez (600 theaters; 44% positive reviews; PG-13). Biopic of the famous civil rights leader.
Bad Words (expanding to 600 theaters; 65% positive reviews; rated R for a brief topless flash from Kimleigh Smith). "The subversive comedy Bad Words (2013) stars Jason Bateman as Guy Trilby, a foul mouthed, intensely negative forty-year-old savant that, through a loophole and with the help of reporter Kathryn Hahn (Jenny Widgeon), enters the Golden Quill, a child’s spelling bee competition."
The Grand Budapest Hotel (expanding to 800 theaters; 91% positive reviews; rated R without nudity). The latest stylized, whimsical effort from Wes Anderson.
Box office:
Noah should take the weekend with about $30M.
Sabotage is expected to finish in high single figures, which will be no better than fourth. That will be a weak performance, given the large number of theaters which will host it.
The Grand Budapest Hotel should be about in the same range as Sabotage, maybe a hair lower, but that'll seem A-Ok from a mere 800 theaters.
Cesar Chavez is a niche offering, and may crawl into the bottom of the leaderboard with four million or so.
Bad Words is expected to do no more than $4M.
