From Masters of Sex to Boardwalk Empire: How Accurate Are Fact-Based Dramas?

From Masters of Sex to Boardwalk Empire: How Accurate Are Fact-Based Dramas?

On a scale from 1 to 100, about 10. I have read the eponymous books upon which both shows are based. The shows use the books, and the real people and events portrayed in them, as a starting point, but they are mostly fictional stories about those real people. Very few of the incidents in the dramas actually happened, and those that did have frequently been placed out of context and chronology.

  1. The quote from Showrunner Winter about knowing the fate of historical figures and how that ruins the thrill of the story says a lot about the imaginativeness of the folks who create these shows. Instead of looking at it and saying to oneself "Wow, I wonder how the writers are going develop this character so it squares with history?" they simply say "He died -- no drama there." If they would take on the challenge of keeping real characters historically accurate, the shows would be much more fascinating and thrilling than when they just make up something that didn't happen to get themselves out of a writing box.
