Shatter is a strong word. Gone Girl is going to finish with about $38m. The Weekend Warrior had predicted $36.5.
Annabelle's result is more surprising. It will finish with about $37m. The range of predictions was $22-$29M.
The choice of verbiage notwithstanding, those results are indeed impressive for two R-rated films, especially since both films received weak CinemaScores. (The low score for Gone Girl really surprised me.)
Reese Witherspoon's The Good Lie failed to reach a million dollars, grossing about half of expectations.
Nic Cage vs Jesus took in about $7M. Its CinemaScore was in the Bs, to which Nic Cage responded, "Not the Bs."
