There are three films in wide national distribution this week:
Gone Girl (3014 theaters; rated R for nudity and other content; 86% positive reviews). David Fincher's dramatic thriller, about a woman suddenly missing from a crumbling marriage, stars Rosamund Pike, Rosamund's butt, Emily Ratajkowski, Emily's breasts, Ben Affleck, and Affleck's penis. So it has basically everything in life worth living for, assuming you don't mind seeing some Bat-Dick.Two films will have limited national releases:
Annabelle (3185 theaters; rated R without nudity; 28% positive reviews). Formulaic horror film loaded with jump scares.
Left Behind (1820 theaters; rated PG-13; 4% positive reviews). Jesus and Nicolas Cage - together at last. Cage faces the rapture.
The Good Lie (461 theaters; rated PG-13; 84% positive reviews). High-minded true story about orphaned kids trying to survive the conflicts in Sudan in the 1980s. It's not as NPR as I've made it sound. In fact, NPR didn't like it, calling it "a big, eager puppy of an issue movie that plants its paws on your chest and licks away at your cheek in eager expectation of praise." It is supposed to be a real mainstream feel-good crowd-pleaser featuring Reese Witherspoon as a do-gooder.Box office:
Bang Bang (271 theaters; unrated ; 0% positive reviews). Bollywood-style action pic.
The experts consider Gone Girl to be the cream of the crop, but there's a wide disparity between their forecasts, ranging from $25M to $37m.
Annabelle should finish second with a gross in the $22-$29 range.
Left Behind is one of those unpredictable films which are promoted through the faith network. $5-$8 million is a decent guess, but these films sometimes break through with much higher totals than we anticipate.
The limited releases are not expected to crack the top ten, which means they will probably gross less than $2M.
