No, it wasn't the Iron Sheik trying to shame America, or Paul Heyman working some kind of publicity angle.
You may remember him as Mankind, or Dude Love, or Commissioner Foley.
He won the WWF championship multiple times, and his Hell in a Cell match against The Undertaker, during which he was feared dead (in reality, not in kayfabe), has often been considered the wildest in WWE/WWF history.
After his championship run, he used his real name, Mick Foley, and took the part of WWF Commissioner (an acting part in the ongoing storyline, not an actual corporate position).
In real life, he's an interesting guy - can take and dish out a joke, writes without a ghostwriter, acts a bit, donates a lot of time to various causes.
As for WingGate, well, it didn't really come as a surprise. Before the contest he tweeted, "Getting ready to rock WingBowl tomorrow! I will follow the wrestler's creed: win if I can, lose if I must, but always cheat!" After being caught on camera, he joked, "Guilty as charged. Legacy shattered. Life in shambles."
