All Snowiest US Cities This Winter (as of March 10)

All Snowiest US Cities This Winter (as of March 10)

Syracuse wins this "Golden Snow Globe" competition most years, but Massachusetts has been hit so hard this year that Syracuse is only second, behind Worcester. In a normal winter, Syracuse gets twice as much snow as Worcester. There is another place in upstate NY, a hamlet called Old Forge, which gets twice as much snow as Syracuse, averages 75 snowy days per year, and has also registered the lowest temperatures in New York State. (In 1979 the mercury hit a toasty -52, excluding wind chill.)

Worcester, Lowell and Boston are 1-3-5 so far this winter, with Syracuse, Buffalo, Erie and Rochester filling out the top other spots in the top seven. (If you look at a map, you'll see that Erie is essentially in western NY, although technically in Pennsylvania.)

While New England and upstate New York have been suffering, we've gotten a free skate up in the tundra. Green Bay has had less than 30 inches this year, and Minneapolis a mere 27! That's virtually nothing when you consider that we had our first snowstorm in mid November! It works out to less than two inches per week. I haven't needed the snow blower all winter, although I used it a couple of times because I have an enormous driveway and felt lazy. I think our heaviest snowfall in a single day was a mere three inches!

  1. Yes, last winter was the triple threat in the Twin Cities: frigid temps, a lot of snow, and long duration. We feel lucky when we only get 2 of the 3.
