There are two movies in wide national release:
Cinderella is Disney's new live action version of the familiar story, as directed by (of all people) Mr. Shakespeare, Kenneth Branagh. Most critics loved it. (3845 theaters; 83% positive reviews; rated PG)
Run All Night is a Liam Neeson movie which, these days, requires no further description. It has become a genre, as Jerry Lewis movies once were. This time he has two irritating sons instead of an irritating daughter, which was probably just a matter of search-and-replace for the screenwriter, because Liam still seems to have the same "particular set of skills." (3171 theaters; rated R without nudity; 50% positive reviews).
Can you guess which one will win the box office? Hint: it is one without Liam Neeson. Also in limited release this weekend: a new horror film called It Follows, which has already been released in France and the UK, and which the critics praised with near unanimity. (93% positive reviews with 66 reviews on the books; rated R for graphic nudity, but not from any of the stars. Olivia Luccardi, Maika Monroe and Lili Sepe get down to bikinis or underwear, but no farther. Leisa Pulido shows a breast, but briefly.) Given the reviews, I'm not sure why they didn't give the film a stronger release, but as Cronkite would always say, "That's the way it is." It will probably not make the top ten.
Cinderella is expected to gross in the $70s. Liam may pull in $15M or so which, while in a distant second place, will still be about twice as much as any other film will gross this weekend.
