Top Movies - Opening in Theaters This Week - Rotten Tomatoes

Top Movies - Opening in Theaters This Week - Rotten Tomatoes

There are three films in national distribution: two wide openings and one with a limited distro.

Chappie (35% positive reviews; 3000+ theaters; rated R for violence, language and brief nudity). The official blurb is as follows: "In the near future, crime is patrolled by an oppressive mechanized police force. But now, the people are fighting back. When one police droid, Chappie, is stolen and given new programming, he becomes the first robot with the ability to think and feel for himself. As powerful, destructive forces start to see Chappie as a danger to mankind and order, they will stop at nothing to maintain the status quo and ensure that Chappie is the last of his kind." The critics basically said "good ideas, creative imagery, mediocre storytelling." The films is likely to finish first at the weekend box office with a total in the mid-twenties.

Unfinished Business: (4% positive reviews, including 0% from the top critics; 2800+ theaters; rated R for some strong risque sexual content/graphic nudity, and for language and drug use). The official description: "A hard-working small business owner (Vince Vaughn) and his two associates (Tom Wilkinson, Dave Franco) travel to Europe to close the most important deal of their lives. But what began as a routine business trip goes off the rails in every imaginable - and unimaginable - way, including unplanned stops at a massive sex fetish event and a global economic summit." The critics basically agreed that the alleged comedy is a massive waste of time which fails in every conceivable way and should have remained unreleased. It should reach double figures at the box office on the strength of its stars, and that should be good enough for second or third place, but you know this one will die quickly once people discover how bad it is. The only consolation is that there is plenty of T&A on display, including the breasts of Rebecca Olejniczak, Bonita Friedericy, Jill Funke, Noelle Trudeau and several others.

The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel (65% positive reviews; 1400+ theaters; rated PG). Like its predecessor, it is considered by critics and test audiences to be a charming movie, but the target market is basically older women, and that is not a target which is likely to deliver a lot of box office punch. This one could finish anywhere between 4th and 10th at the weekend box office, because there is a massive group of films which will all fall in the range between $4M and $7M, and Marigold Hotel should be in there somewhere.
