About 30 years ago, I attended Wrestlemania 2. It was an odd one, held in three different arenas across the country on a Monday, so I only saw 1/3 of the live matches. I say "odd" because the WWE never repeated the 3-venue format, and they never again held the card on a weekday.
The main event in Nassau was a boxing match between Mr. T and Roddy Piper, in which each of them was seconded by boxing legends. Needless to say, Piper eventually lost his temper and body-slammed T, thus provoking a DQ. On the undercard, the Magnificent Muraco made an appearance (who remembers Fuji Vice? I loved it!), Jake Roberts was there with his snake, and Miss Elizabeth brought some glamour to the match between the Macho Man and George "The Animal" Steele.
Randy Savage and Roddy Piper have passed on, but most of the other guys I saw that day are still around, even George "The Animal" Steele (real name - the pedestrian William "Jim" Myers), who was quite a bit older than the others. You may not be aware that The Animal, whose WWE character was mentally challenged, actually received a B.S. from Michigan State, and then obtained a graduate degree as well!
Number 32 will be held in Arlington, Texas. The contest winners win a trip to the Dallas area, all accommodations, $1,000 in spending money and 4 tickets to WrestleMania. I can guarantee you'll have a great time. In fact, you'll have a blast even if you don't follow wrestling! I've been to many sporting events since then, but I still think WWE puts on the best show, and I look back fondly on that day: lots of fun, lots of excitement, and plenty of spectacle. There are about 30 days in my life that I'd love to relive, and that's one of them.
