In 1975, the Howard Johnson's company had more than 1,000 restaurants and more than 500 motor lodges in 42 states and Canada. That company sold out to a British group in 1979 and the package was acquired by Marriott in 1985. The Wyndham Hotel group is the current owner, and they still have 400 motel locations, which are now called Howard Johnson (without the apostrophe s).
