That's not tacky, it's just midcentury modern (okay, a few touches are a little tacky). Still, my wife and I love that look so much, we're planning to visit Palm Springs in February for Midcentury Modern Week, which is a big deal there. We had to reserve a hotel months in advance because it draws such a huge crowd.
I don't think those are period decorations at all, rather contemporary mid-century style furnishings. Clearly the kitchen is not original with its granite countertops and under-mount sink.
