Meryl Streep overrated? Donald Trump picks a decorated star

Dumb, dumb article that actually proves Trump's point. (And proving that Trump is correct on something is not easy to do, because he doesn't give you a lot to work with!) The article shows all the awards Streep has won, which only proves she is rated and praised to an extreme degree.

If she has received far more awards and praise than similarly capable actresses, let's say Julianne Moore or Cate Blanchett, then she is therefore ... um ... "overrated."

Oops.

Furthermore, the author of the article doesn't seem to realize that even if Streep really is the best actress in the world, she STILL could be overrated. As a general rule, the person who is the best at something is frequently overrated because of the halo effect. (People may say a movie sucks until they find out it was directed by Famous So-and-so. Then it becomes a work of genius to them! How many times have critics given good reviews to Woody Allen's latest hack job just because they know it was directed by Woody Allen.)

Having noted all that, I'd point out that you can almost always refute Trump's words with his own words, because he just spits out whatever is convenient in the moment so, over the course of time, will take all sides of all issues. If you do the research, you'll easily find the time when he told the Hollywood Reporter that Streep was an excellent actress and a fine human being, one of two actresses he named among those he "loves." (Julia Roberts was the other he mentioned by name.)

  1. The only problem with the article is that the term "overrated" actually means the opposite. It describes someone or something that is priced or paid more than it or he/she is worth, thus it is overrated.
