Yordano Ventura, Kansas City Royals pitcher, dies
Car wreck.
He was 25.
Lifetime record 38-31 in 93 starts.
He seemed to be a troubled guy. His rookie year was really solid, but he backslid in 2015. He was suspended for seven games and spent a month on the DL. Compared to the previous year, his ERA increased. His ERA increased again in 2016 because he gave up more hits, more walks and more homers. He again served a suspension for his temper displays, and his strikeout rate also dropped dramatically.
Oddly enough, another major league player from the Dominican Republic, Andy Marte, died in a separate car crash on the very same night. Marte was on the Indians roster for several years, mostly as a third baseman, but never hit well (lifetime .218) and never won a regular job. He appeared in more than 300 MLB games, but in the last six seasons his only major league service consisted of six games with the Braves in 2014. In 2013-2014 he had some good AAA numbers in the Pacific Coast League, and that was enough to earn him an offer from the Korean Baseball Organization, where he again posted solid numbers in 2015 and 2016. (In 2015 he finished fifth in the league in batting average with a solid .348 mark.)
