The article nails it: the first true video game was Spacewar! Those text games didn't use a true video monitor, rather, they used terminal screens only capable of text. Spacewar! Also predated Pong in public as the first arcade game. I'm annoyed I never played one in the wild. Did play Pong, though, when I was very young in the 70s.
Oh no. I wasn't trying to include text based games as a 'the first video games,' clearly text and video are two different things, I was just adding some additional facts/context. Maybe I should have been more clear.
There were also text based computer games prior to pong. The most famous of these was probably Taipan.
