Are awards shows losing their appeal?

Are awards shows losing their appeal?

Short answer: yes

Long answer: hell, yes.

Many reasons:

1. Too long

2. Too boring. Thank you speeches were bad enough, but now we have to listen to their politics as well.

3. Too preachy

4. Too much competition from other award shows, reducing each one's uniqueness.

5. Too much competition from highlight shows on the internet and elsewhere. I feel the same way about award shows that I do about baseball games. I want to watch twenty-thirty minutes of highlights, not 3 hours of tedium. If I can see those highlights without commercials, that's even better.

6. In the case of the Oscars: too many unknown and/or unpopular films that few people care to be reminded about or celebrated. The Oscars could rebound next year if Black Panther gets several nominations.

7. Television viewing is declining in general.

  1. Award shows have been meaningless for a long time. (The Oscar, in particular, are outdated and useless) In my opinion, I put more weight behind someone who went to a movie and had a good time than some shithead executive who decided I deserved an award.

And can someone tell me why MTV even has award shows anymore? Does anyone even watch MTV anymore? Does anyone care? I don't!
