Inside remote icy town where you’re NOT ALLOWED TO DIE

Inside the remote icy town where you’re NOT ALLOWED TO DIE

Oddly enough, one guy who used to contribute to the Fun House (he called himself "Frost") was originally from there!

"THESE stunning snaps from the remote Norwegian town of Longyearbyen make it look something straight out of a fairy tale. But behind the pictures lies a somewhat bizarre law which the 2,000 residents in the town have to follow – it is illegal to die there. Dying has been banned on the island since 1950 because bodies simply freeze."

When I lived in Norway, my former girlfriend and I planned to make an excursion to Svalbard (in summer, of course), which is said to be a fascinating place, "where coal-mining families and polar bears live side by side." It is the world's northernmost settlement of any kind with greater than 1,000 permanent residents. How far north is it? Imagine this. It is a three hour flight almost due north from Oslo! The capital city is north of the 78th parallel. (Point Barrow, Alaska is only on the 70th!)

I never made it there.
