I had no idea he was still alive.

I was in Port-au-Prince during the Baby Doc years, and it was a depressing place, to be sure.

On the other hand, I don't suppose it's all that much better now, and I have no plans to check up on its progress.

Baby Doc finished sixth in a study of The World's Most Corrupt Leaders, 1984-2004, and was said to have amassed a fortune approaching $800 million. That number would seem even more impressive if dictators had been rated by the percentage of what was available. Essentially, he stole everything of value in Haiti except the mahogany trees, and he probably would have chopped those down and taken them with him to exile in France if he had a big enough suitcase.
