The only new movie in wide release was the PG-13 comedy with Reese Witherspoon and Sofia Vergara, a sort of female version of the "mismatched buddy" formula. It took in $14M for second place, despite receiving only 6% positive reviews (3% from the top critics). For reference, Paul Blart 2 also ended up at 6% when all the ballots were cast, although the Blartmeister held on to a perfect 0% from the top critics.
(Almost needless to say, the one and only positive review for Hot Pursuit from the top critic group came from the Village Voice. I've noted this handy rule of thumb many times: if you really want some value from movie reviews, read the Voice and assume the opposite is true.)
The mighty Avengers grossed another $77M. Only the first Avengers movie had a better second weekend.
