Russian-funded Facebook ads backed Stein, Sanders and Trump
Because of the multiple investigations into Trump-Russia collusion, we tend to forget what had been evident from the beginning - that the Russians were not really pro-Trump, or for that matter pro-anything. They were anti-Hillary, and Trump was the ultimate beneficiary.
Of course that doesn't let the President or his team off the hook if they co-operated with Russians to influence an American election, but it does offer some insight into the motivations of the Russians.
In the midst of the anti-Clinton campaign were some miscellaneous ads promoting lefty groups like Muslim Women for Clinton and BLM. At this moment we don't know who these were targeted toward. It is possible that they were exaggerated presentations aimed at (for example) scaring elderly white voters rightward to safety from these groups in the general election, in which case they would be consistent with the general anti-Clinton theme, but there may have been other motivations behind these ads as well. We'd need to know their exact nature, when they were run (primaries vs general election), and whom they targeted. I hope Facebook and/or Congress shares all this info with us so we can better try to assess the overall strategy.
