This is a pretty good model for the spectrum of net immigration. It's not perfect, of course, but the general rules are:
(1) the happier a country is, the less likely people are to leave it;
(2) people only migrate upward on the chart. People leave South Sudan when they can, but not Norway. That's why Trump's dream of more Norwegian immigrants is hopeless.
To put it in Trumpian terms, people move from shithole-replete countries to countries which are shithole-free, if possible. If that can't be done, they at least try for a country that has fewer shitholes than their own. In this case, a figurative shithole may be unchecked violence, a corrupt regime, a civil war, a record of human rights violations, or of course a literal shithole.
