Robert De Niro, Onstage at the Tony Awards: “Fuck Trump!”
Classy guy.
I don't believe this is the right way to express dissatisfaction with the President. In fact, this sort of thing helps Trump in his ongoing campaign to undermine America's venerable institutions. It also gives ammunition to the Trump support circle, allowing schmucks like Sean Hannity to stir up their base with rhetoric about the evil Hollywood elite.
Criticize President Trump? Sure. Nobody is immune from criticism. Even the sainted Abe Lincoln made serious mistakes.
Ridicule President Trump? By all means. Making fun of the President is almost as old as the presidency itself. George Washington seems to have gotten a pass, more or less, but Adams and Jefferson were routinely mocked.
But do those things with wit and style and facts, not rhetoric and invective, and retain a respect for the office of the president. If not, you're just being crass, classless, and vulgar, therefore generally acting like ... well ... like Donald J. Trump.
What's wrong with a little locker room talk?
ReplyDeleteMore seriously I don't think I agree with this.
ReplyDelete1.Trump's idiot cultist don't need any ammunition to believe anything they're told.
2.If you believe that what is said can make a difference, then how do you know that the idiot Trump cultists seeing Trump's vulgarity thrown back at him won't work?
For instance:
Jeff Tiedrich
@jefftiedrich
Deplorables: "Chelsea Clinton is ugly. Hillary is a hag. Obama is an ape. Michelle Obama is a man. Libtards are fragile snowflakes. Ha ha, did I trigger you? Fuck your feelings."
also Deplorables: "How dare Robert DeNiro say something mean about Trump."

3.I hope we can at least agree that anybody who voted for Trump showed no respect for the office of the President, or for the United States for that matter.
It won't work because it convinces the Trump crowd that everything he says about Hollywood and the Fake Media is true: they're out to get him. '
DeleteDeNiro just made an ass of himself. Although, to be fair, DeNiro pretty much always makes an ass of himself.
The idiot Trump cultists can be easily convinced of anything pro-Trump whether there is any factual basis for it or not. This makes no difference.
DeleteI agree that DeNiro can be a weird guy, especially some of his off color jokes. But, DeNiro, unlike Trump has definitely shown integrity and decency throughout his career.
DeleteAfter the success of Taxi Driver, DeNiro had the opportunity to demand a much larger salary, or to get out of, starring in the movie Deer Hunter, but he insisted on honoring his contract.
The Deer Hunter was also in trouble as one of the supporting actors, John Cazale, was dying of cancer and the studio refused to pay the high rate for his insurance, so DeNiro paid the insurance himself (the director of the film, Michael Cimino was the one who told these things.)
Not only would the idea of Trump or anyone in his crime syndicate doing something like that be laughable, but I doubt most people in the position to do so, would do those things.
From a person on a different forum. This is what I've been arguing, but it's much better put that I've been able to do so:
DeleteI'm tired of this narrative that we have to tip toe around their feelings or else they'll vote Trump again. Like it's being held over our heads. They will vote for him no matter what anyone says. Fck him and his supporters.
People are starting to realize all the dems have is insults and anti Trump viewpoints. When you find your party defending ISIS, MS-13, and James Comey...maybe it's time to find another platform.
ReplyDeletePeople are starting to realize all the GOPs have is supporting and accepting, quietly or vociferously, pathological liar’s (Trump) daily lies, divisiveness the likes of which one has never seen.
DeleteWhen you find your party with the leader who sides with or defends KKK, neo-Nazis, white nationalist and has viewpoints that erode America democracy bedrock foundations, weakening of American’s standings, endangering people around the world with crackpot theory about global warming (China made it up), has a huge boner for his own daughter... maybe it's time to find another platform.
See, it’s easy. I can backup all my claim but you can’t.

ReplyDeleteIdiot Trump cultist, is this the latest chant?
ReplyDeleteIt don't see how it could have a good beat. I know you Trump cultists are idiots, but you should be given better material than this.
So brave.
ReplyDeleteI agreed that it's not helping anything.
ReplyDeleteWhat interesting is that DeNiro seems to be one of the few people that Trump will not attack. I'm sure there's some fucked-up psychological reason for this, just as like with everything else about Trump.
DeNiro’s invective reflects where the culture/politics is where it is. It's no longer about changing minds. It is no longer about debate. It’s about maximizing the outrage on the side you agree with and depressing the opposition of those who you don’t agree with.
ReplyDeleteRepublicans tried to do it in 1998 and failed. Think it’s going to succeed this time? We’ll have to wait and see if “we hate the President” works in another off year election.
Lazy false equivalence.
DeleteIn addition to being lazy false equivalence, your argument is also completely wrong in the you left out that it worked for Republicans in 2010 and 2014.
DeleteI can agree with some of what you wrote in the first paragraph, but overall I think your so out of touch with reality that I'm prepared to believe the reason you brought up the 1998 election is because you think it's 2000.
Just words! de Niro's Travis Bickle tried to take real action against Palantine! Let's see some of that!
